I have been running for as long as I can remember. It has always been a natural thing for me. Since my late teens I have slowly increased mileage goals to test my physical and psychological limits. Running is a part of who I am, it is just so natural.
Everybody who is reading this has a passion. My passion is to help people. Why not utilize my ability to run, combined with a relentless passion to educate and help people and go with it? Why not try the unthinkable?
When I was about 12 years old, my mom was diagnosed with cervical cancer and it caused me to grow up too quickly. With two younger sisters, my life as a twelve year old dramatically changed. Suddenly I had more responsibilities, and beyond that, I had an ever-growing worried feeling about my mom. Until such a time as a loved one is put into a situation that compromises their well-being or potentially threatens their life, it is truly difficult to understand. A few years later, I lost my Poppa Cannata (my paternal grandfather) to cancer. This hit my family hard and again I (we) were struck with a feeling of helplessness.
It was this feeling of helplessness that drove me to run across Canada. It is not fair for anybody to have feelings of helplessness as a loved one struggles through this disease.
The best way that I could think of to prevent these circumstances is to cut them off at the source. We made a stand and fought back. We helped to fuel the fight against cancer with a fund/hope-raising endeavour that united many. With a mutual goal and a national community, anything is possible.
